“Longreach” is a man-portable system that allows for the rapid conveyance of temporary, water-activated buoyancy devices to a drowning victim’s location. It is designed to allow a victim to remain buoyant while rescue personnel prepare the appropriate response to the situation. The rescue package uses expanding foam to provide buoyancy once the package contacts the water. This allows the package to be vastly smaller in size than any currently existing buoyancy device. Equipped with a light for attracting attention the Rescue Package can be propelled over 150m. Longreach is also equipped with Para-Flares for night-time Illumination. Longreach is designed to be simple to manufacture and easy to handle. Ideally used by emergency services personnel or a ship’s crew, Longreach has the potential to significantly reduce the number of drownings at sea. Longreach is not the ultimate solution to water rescue but rather a system that allows a rescuer an immediate action; something they can do to instantaneously to allow them for time to properly access an appropriate response, without the added stress of risking their own lives unnecessarily. Inspiration Military training is typically about the use of lethal force but for UNSW Industrial Design student Sam Adeloju, Army experience was the inspiration for a life-saving idea. Sam’s exposure to hi-tech grenade propulsion technology during training with the Army Reserves gave him the idea for a flotation device that could be safely …

The Cove is a 2009 American documentary film about the annual killing of dolphins in a National Park at Taiji, Wakayama, in Japan. The film highlights that the number of dolphins killed is several times greater than the number of whales killed in the Antarctic, and claims that 23000 dolphins and porpoises are killed in Japan every year. The migrating dolphins are herded into a hidden cove where they are netted and killed by means of spears and knives over the side of small fishing boats. The film was directed by former National Geographic photographer Louie Psihoyos, and portions were filmed secretly during 2007 using underwater microphones and high-definition cameras disguised as rocks. For many in the boating community in and around Chestertown, it was not surprising that Gratitude Yachting Center was named Best Business in Kent County by the Chamber of Commerce last January. Founded by Ed Kurowski in 1980, and later joined by his wife Robin and friend, Jack Heffner, this management trio have run a world class boat brokerage, charter, and school, not to meantion Hawaian Shirt retailer on Lawton Avenue for almost 30 years. What is surprising is that they have done it with the casual decision-making style and charm of a Jimmy Buffet as well as a devotion to Rock Hall that sets them far apart from the competition. From small fishing boats to transatlantic luxury yachts, the GYC has always sold products they love to people they care about.

Furuno 1715 RADAR, 7″ LCD Display, 18″ Radome Antenna, 1/8 – 24 nautical miles range, 2.2 KW transmitter, NAV DATA display, DC Voltage. Available from PSICOMPANY.COM. Call 1-800-826-2907… Get More Information on Furuno 1715 RADAR: www.psicompany.com www.psicompany.com The Furuno 1715 RADAR is a high contrast LCD radar designed for pleasure craft and small fishing boats. Radar echoes are presented in four shades of gray on the 7″ Silver Bright LCD. The Radar offers detailed pictures of coastline and targets at short ranges thanks to narrower pulselengths and dual IF bandwidths. The antenna rotation speed automatically changes depending on the range selection for optimum target detection. The compact, waterproof display allows table top or panel mounting in the cockpit or on the open fly bridge. The radar has a power saving Watchman mode. In this mode, the antenna is stopped and the transmission is off, while the screen displays nav data only. The radar wakes up at a specified time interval (5, 10 or 20 min) and operates for a minute. If a target enters the Guard Zone, an audible alarm sounds and the radar goes into its normal operating mode, cancelling the Watchman mode. The alarm may also be set to work for a target leaving the Zone. Other standard features include: EBL (Electronic Bearing Line), VRM (Variable Range Marker), TLL output (Target L/L), Cursor L/L readout, Echo Trail, Guard Zone Alarm, Anti Clutter Rain, Automatic control of tuning and sensitivity. The A/C …

Preview of Cytravel’s blog at TravelPod. Read the full blog here: www.travelpod.com This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Trivandrum, India Entry Title: “5000 year old temple” Entry: “We left Kerry’s apartment at about 10 AM for the Mumbai domestic airport. This time we took an auto-rickshaw. They are really a motorcycle with three wheels, a wind shield and a frame that holds the cover. There was just room enough between the seat and rear cover to stick two small suitcases – which was amazing. The auto rickshaw has a size advantage in this traffic. It can fit into really small openings and pass the cars, trucks and buses by weaving in and out, creating new lanes. We also passed bikes, crossing pedestrians, street vendors, beggars and the occasional buffalo pulling a milk cart. It was actually nice to have open air sides to provide a breeze. The vast majority of taxis are tiny and not air conditioned. Our luggage would have been tied on to the top of the cab. Another plus for the rickshaw is that the trip to the airport cost about $3. Bombay was already hot and smoky and we were happy to move on. On the way to the airport we passed Dharavi, the slum made famous by Slumdog Millionaire. We could only see the edge of the slum from the street, but from the air we got the full view. It is enormous – a vast array of gray roofs without roads that goes on and on and on. It is the largest slum in Asia and more than 1 …

Located on the west coast of Africa, Senegal is one of the continent’s most exciting destinations. Globe Trekker Zoe Palmer starts her journey in the capital Dakar, the vibrant home of more than 2 million people. After checking out the city’s colorful markets and pulsating nightclubs, she visits historic Gorée Island, just offshore, to learn of its infamous past as one of the centers of the slave trade in West Africa. Zoe catches a gig by the godfather of Senegalese music, Youssou N’Dour and also learns about the harsh reality of poverty in Senegal, when she meets one of the thousands of Senegalese who over recent years have risked their lives attempting the perilous journey in small fishing boats to Europe in search of a better life. Leaving Dakar, Zoe travels deep into the interior of Senegal, stopping off at the Muslim holy city of Touba, en route to the Niokola-Koba National Park. Heading onwards into the remote territory of the Bassari people, Zoe visits the village of Oubadji, where she is privileged to see a rarely witnessed traditional tribal ceremony. Making the long journey back to Dakar, Zoe flies on to the little known Cape Verde islands, 500 kilometers off the Senegalese coast. With a spectacularly beautiful volcanic landscape, these islands were once at the center of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Offshore from Santiago Island, she goes wreck-diving and explores a collection of barnacle-encrusted anchors belonging to old sailing ships, many of them slavers …
